Thank you to everyone who participated in Tuesday's donations for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Bank. We had 78 staff and students sign-up to donate and were able to collect from 55 donors.
Here are some facts about blood donation, from the Texas Medical Center:
The Greater Houston area needs approximately 800-1,000 blood donations daily to meet the needs of our local hospitals.
Most of the blood collected during an academic year comes from high schools.
The blood center conducts over 100 donation drives per week, which results in approximately 24,000 units collected per month.
One "unit" (one pint) can produce plasma, platelets, and whole blood to save up to three lives.
Approximately 16 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
Thank you for saving lives with your donation!
